It all started when I became interested in SLR cameras during a holiday. In 1980 I bought a Konica TC. Later on I added a few lenses and an FS-1 body. (which had a cool motordrive). I used these two cams for quite a while. When the kids were born, I bought a compact camera so I didn't have to take my case with all the Konica gear in it with me.
Then the digital ear started. It took a while before the quality of the digital pics came close to the analog ones. My first digital cam was a Sony DSC P series. I don't remember which one exactly, I thought it was a P7. After that I had a few others. The last Cybershot was the DSC-W40 which had a stunning 6 megapixel resolution.
Since the annoying slow response of the cams, I decided to get a digital SLR, the Sony A200. Together with two zoom lenses it was not too much to walk around with. On a holiday at Fuerteventura I bumped into the Sony HX100V which had a huge zoom range, so it was able to replace the A200 with the two lenses. No lense swapping anymore and way more easy to take with you.
After a while the HX400V came out which was a good choice to upgrade to. Quite a large zoom range, not the largest on the market, but more than good enough for me.
I had the opportunity to buy a very nice Nikon set (a D300s with a bunch of lenses) from a friend who quit photography. He sold the stuff to me for a crazy low price. It was a great set, but I never became friends with the Nikon interface, so after a year I ended up selling the set. I kept the Manfrotto tripod which was a massive upgrade of my old one.
Not that I am a fan of all Sony electronics, but through the years I appeared to become a life time Sony user when it comes to camera gear.
In 2015 I bumped into the Sony A77 mark II. An awesome camera with great specifications. I just wanted to have one and I decided to purchase it using no smoking money (quit smoking and use the saved money for it). I got the 16-50mm 2.8 lense with it.
For some reason I am a fan of zooming in a lot, so I added a rather cheap 70-300mm Sony lense to the set. After a while it appeared that I was not very satisfied with the zoom range which made me buy a Tamron 150-600mm Di G2 lense. Pretty expensive but awesome lense for things you can't get close to.
My HX400V got some defect which made it function not properly anymore, so it was time to replace it. I decided to buy a RX10IV, an awesome camera with an impressive zoom range that matches the added up ranges of the lenses for my A77II. It doesn't beat the A77II with the 150-600mm on it, but it comes close. Biggest plus is the the single device that you can take along anywhere.
Of course there are better cameras available nowadays. I have looked at the A7 IV more than once, but the amount of money that would go into a new set goes beyond the camera budget.
Through the years, the cameras in smartphones developed to a surprisingly high level. Of course there is a lot of software involved to get great results, but I must say that the camera in my Samsung S24 Ultra is pretty awesome. Very handy if you want to make a pic when you don't have your camera gear with you.
